Approach on site

Conservation comes first. Anything that may be removed is recorded beforehand, and nothing irreplaceable is taken down. Where a choice exists, the reversible intervention is preferred.

The hardest decision in restoration is what to keep and what to renew. We begin by recording the existing condition: the state of the stone, loss of pointing, deviation from vertical, sources of damp and any active cracking. The level of intervention then follows from what the fabric can carry. In masonry walls we prefer to keep original stone in place, opening only failed joints and repointing with a compatible mortar. Render, timber joinery and roof coverings are renewed close to their original detailing. Surface work never starts before the source of damp is resolved, or the same decay simply returns.
